Lori Early Interview

Vivianite: Could you tell us where you're from and a little bit about your background?
Lori Earley: I'm from Rye, New York. It's a really small, conservative town. I always felt a bit like an outsider there. I remember I couldn't wait to graduate high school just so I can move to NYC where all the action and inspiration was.

Congratulations on making it to the cover of Juxtapoz Art Magazine, that must feel great?
Yes, definitely! It's very cool to walk into a book store and see one of my paintings on the shelf staring back at me.

I think there is a beautiful darkness in your art, would you consider your art being dark?
I never knew my paintings were dark until people kept saying they were. Looking back at them, I can definitely see that they are very dark!

How would you describe your style to someone that has not seen your art?
When I first tried to describe my work to people- I was at a loss for words. It's hard sometimes for an artist to describe something visual into verbal terms. I would say my paintings are realistically-rendered, distorted, figurative art.

You have been influenced by Marshall Aris and Steven Assael (I read it in your bio), do you have any other influences?
Yes, I can be influenced by so many different things- a movie, a person, a great song, another artist, an experience, an atmospherically moody day, etc. I do like the art of Camille Rose Garcia and Floria Sigismondi though to name a few.

Is there anything else you want to explore with your art beside the figure?
I am currently working on a lot of conceptual pieces, incorporating more backgrounds and symbolism into each painting.

How do people respond to your artwork?
I've gotten absolutely swamped with emails and phone calls since my article in Juxtapoz came out. I must have received over a thousand emails of people telling me how much of an inspiration I am to them and how much they love my art on an emotional and technical level. I'm still trying to answer all of them too! I put so much time and hard work into my paintings that it means a lot to me to hear all this positive feedback. It definitely helps get me through the struggle sometimes!

How do you come up with your figures? Do you use models?
Yes, I always do a photo shoot and do a drawing from my photo afterwards.

Do you have any favourite art events/museums/galleries you like to visit?
I really like to walk around Chelsea when the weather is warmer to pop in all the art galleries there. I would love to go to Europe one day to see all the beautiful architecture and museums there!

Can you tell us something about the feat
ure painting "Commencement"?
I've never told a soul what any of my paintings mean. They are so personal to me that it would be like publishing my diary. I try to give a hint and indication to what they mean by their titles though- and the rest is up to the viewer's interpretation.

What painting in history do you wish you would have painted?
That's a really interesting question-
I don't know. I guess none- because I love painting my own paintings so much that I couldn't even relate to being in someone else's mindset.

Where is your favourite place in New York?
I like to pull my car over on Broadway just to people- watch. I can do it for hours- it's so inspiring! I also like downtown and Soho where it's an in-your-face splash of colors, fashion, people and art all concentrated in one little area.

What are your favourite things to do on your sparetime?
To be honest with you I don't have that much spare time at all! When I do, I like to visit some antique stores (they always have the creepiest things there!), and of course, I'm always up for a great time since I spend so much of it working! I'm on a karaoke kick right now (hahaha!)

Can you recommend any good movies or DVDs?
AMELIE AMELIE AMELIE!!! My all-time favorite movie! I also loved Jacob's Ladder and Buffalo 66.

Thanks a lot for your time and your amazing art!
Your Welcome- thank you!
